We aim to make a difference in the lives of the people who produce, prepare and consume the thing we love: coffee.
We do this by living in coffee origin countries and working directly with small and medium coffee producers.
We believe that connecting farmers, roasters and consumers, promoting equal trading conditions, sustainability and involvement of new generation in the coffee industry will improve farmers’ production standards and the consistency in quality of the products they produce.
Replanting farms with productive and residents varieties!
The idea of this particular project was born after years of observing huge coffee harvest fluctuation and drop in coffee production year after year.
Coffee producers are trying to increase their yields but it has been challenging due to lack of funds to invest in renovations in their farms.
We have started gathering information about how much of coffee farms produce and what’s the ideal balance between the renovation area and the production area to sustain the whole operation thru the years that the whole renovation requires which is around 4 years.
During those 4 years there are costs included of maintenance and momentary reduction in the income as the yield reduces.
Renovations of farms range from 5-10% per year but lately farmers struggle to replant farms due to high costs of coffee production and low incomes due to low coffee prices.
We decided to focus on supporting farms and offering to purchase coffee plants that are more disease resistant and highly productive maintaining the solid quality.
To renovate one lot of coffee that would be approximately 1100 square meters holds a cost between $600 – $800 depending on the spacing of the coffee trees.
This is only a cost of purchasing from 360 – 600 plants of coffee that would cover one lot area.
The project will give an opportunity to producers to renovate some percentage of their farms year after year as thanks to this support the cost of renovation will drop significantly.
One plant of traditional coffee varieties like caturra, bourbon, TYPICA and hybrid varieties cost varies between $0,25-0,50c
Our aim is to focus more on hybrid varieties that are more disease and climate resistant, require less labor and less maintenance therefore less cost.
The varieties include: H1, Anacafe 14, Obata and Marcellesa. They all are highly productive and they have been getting applause in the end cup.
We are looking forward to start supporting the future of sustainable coffee production.
